The State of the Kids Today
December 24th, 2008 Posted in Kat, WilliamToday, as Kat came out of her room this morning, she was complaining about William getting to watch Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer without her. As she complained, I looked at Kat and realized, wow, she looks different. The baby has completely grown out at this point. She just looks older. Her hair has changed as well. It is growing more course, more adult. I guess I am saying that she is really starting to grow up.
And as she grows up, it is clear that her caring nature continues to unfold. She has taken to reading William stories. She helps out around the house. She really is turning into an amazing person. In short, I am very proud of her. Moreover, I am very impressed with her and her actions.
William is growing up as well. These days, he has taken to just making his mind up what he wants and trying to get it before anyone can stop him. It is funny to watch him as pushes chairs across the floor, climbs the cabinets, jumps off furniture, whatever it takes to do exactly what he wants, to get whatever he wants, to eat whatever he wants. And oh the rage that ensues when he is thwarted. He screams, he throws. He tantrums. But he is also very smart.
If he is planning something that he knows I won’t approve, he tells me to go. If I try to take something out of his hand, he tells me, “No, this is mine.” If I block his effort, he pushes me and says, “get out of the way.” He is so amazing.
We are so lucky to have such great kids.
The big thing I am working on with Kat is trying to teach her to not get upset and frustrated and start complaining. “What does complaining do for you?” I ask her. You have two choices, I say. “You can complain and whine, or you can figure out how to make a change, to turn lemons into lemonaide.”
With William, I am working on teaching him not to throw things.
